How a Thai address is built
A Thai address runs from the smallest unit to the largest, the same direction in both scripts. It starts with the house number, then the soi (lane) and road, then the subdistrict, the district, the province, and finishes with the five-digit postal code. The country line, THAILAND, is added only for mail sent from abroad. The parts that trip people up are the names of the subdistrict, district, and province, because each has an official Thai spelling and an official English spelling that do not always match how a name sounds. This tool takes both spellings from the same government dataset, so the two blocks describe the same place.
Bangkok is labelled differently
Outside Bangkok, a subdistrict is a tambon (ตำบล) and a district is an amphoe (อำเภอ). Inside Bangkok, the same levels are called khwaeng (แขวง) and khet (เขต). The tool applies the correct prefix automatically once you pick a place, so a Bangkok address reads แขวง and เขต while an address in any other province reads ตำบล and อำเภอ. Getting this label right is a small detail that tells a local courier you know the address is genuine.
Which block to use
Hand the Thai script block to a local courier or write it on a domestic parcel; it is what a Thai sorting office and a motorbike rider read fastest. Paste the Latin block into an overseas checkout or a customs form, where the sender and the origin post office cannot read Thai. Both carry the same postal code, which is the part a sorting machine relies on, so a correct code plus a correct subdistrict is enough to deliver even if a name is transliterated a little differently elsewhere.
Common mistakes
- Guessing the English spelling. Official romanisation is irregular. Use the spelling shown here rather than a phonetic guess.
- Using tambon and amphoe in Bangkok. Bangkok uses khwaeng and khet. The tool switches the labels for you.
- Dropping the postal code. The five-digit code is the one part a machine reads. Keep it on the last line with the province.
- Writing the country on a domestic parcel. Add THAILAND only for mail coming from another country.
