How to write a Maltese address (with examples)

A Maltese address runs from small to large: the house number and street first, then the locality in capitals with its postcode on the same line, and the country last. The postcode is the part that confuses people, because it is not a plain number. It is three letters, a space, and four digits, and the letters do most of the work.

The name and house number are illustrative. VLT is the real prefix for Valletta.

How the code is built

The three letters identify the locality and never change for that place: VLT for Valletta, SLM for Sliema, MSD for Msida. The four digits after them narrow the address to a street or a block. That second half is held by MaltaPost and is not published as open data, so this site lists the prefix for all 73 localities and tells you where to get the rest. Anyone showing you a complete list of every Maltese postcode has either bought it or invented it.

Finding your four digits

Look at anything already addressed to you first: a utility bill, an identity card, a delivered parcel. The full code is printed there. If you have nothing to hand, the MaltaPost postcode finder returns the exact code when you enter a street name. A wrong last four digits still reaches the right locality; it only slows delivery down.

What to enter on a foreign form

Postal code / ZIP	Three letters, a space, four digits: VLT 1117. If the field rejects the space, enter VLT1117.
City	Your locality, for example Valletta or Sliema. Not "Malta".
State / Province	Malta has no states. Leave it blank, or use your region such as Northern Harbour.
Phone	With the country code: +356 and eight digits.
Country	Malta. The country code is MT.

Common mistakes

Writing Malta as the city. Malta is the country. The city field wants your locality, and there are 73 of them.
Guessing the four digits. The last four narrow the code to a street. Check a bill or use the MaltaPost finder rather than inventing them.
Dropping the definite article without checking. Sliema is Tas-Sliema in Maltese and Msida is L-Imsida. Either form is understood, but forms printed in Maltese use the longer one.
Putting the postcode on its own line. It belongs on the same line as the locality, after it, not underneath.
