Which code to use

Kuwait runs a hybrid system, and this is where most people get stuck. The general area code is a 5-digit number that covers a whole area and is what an online checkout or shipping form expects. The block code is a finer 5-digit number used by the post for delivery within a numbered block, and a PO Box code is used only for post office box holders. When a form asks for a postal or ZIP code, enter the general area code for your area. The block and PO Box numbers are not wrong, but they are meant for the postal service rather than for a form. Each area page on this site shows the general code first, then the block range and PO Box range where they are known, so nothing is guessed.

How a Kuwait address is written

A Kuwait address is written from the smallest unit to the largest: the block, street, and building or house number, then the area, then the general postal code with the governorate, and finally Kuwait. Streets in Kuwait are numbered inside a numbered block rather than named, so the block and street numbers do most of the work of placing a delivery. Couriers usually phone the recipient, so an address is normally paired with a +965 mobile number. The six governorates

• Al Asimah (Capital). Kuwait City and the central business and government area, including Sharq, Dasman, and Mirqab.
• Hawalli. A dense residential and commercial belt east of the city, including Salmiya, Hawally, Salwa, and Jabriya.
• Farwaniya. A large residential governorate near the airport, including Farwaniya, Khaitan, and Jleeb Al-Shuyoukh.
• Ahmadi. The southern oil and coastal governorate, including Fahaheel, Mangaf, Mahboula, and Abu Halifa.
• Jahra. The northern and desert governorate, including Jahra town and the outlying residential areas.
• Mubarak Al-Kabeer. A newer residential governorate, including Sabah Al-Salem, Al-Qurain, and Al-Adan.
